General Questions

A forensic psychologist provides assessment and treatment to justice-involved individuals. They may consult with law enforcement, lawyers, or the court.

A clinical psychologist provides assessment, treatment, and diagnoses for psychological conditions and/or behavioural concerns.

Clinical psychologists often work with the general public. In contrast, a forensic psychologist generally works with justice-involved individuals and/or addresses behaviour that may cause a person to come into contact with the law.

You can schedule a consultation when you believe you should be seeing a psychologist due to your current circumstance, or your lawyer has recommended you seek treatment.

  • Assessment rates are based on the complexity of the case, time required, and expertise of the psychologist.
  • Fees associated with third-party consultations, including lawyers and community supervision teams and treatment reports, are discussed in your initial consultation prior to commencing with treatment.

Assessment Questions

It is important to bring a list of your questions, symptoms, and pertinent information related to your circumstance. You should also bring a list of medications you may be taking. If you are an individual who has come into contact with the law, we recommend you consult with your lawyer regarding your documentation prior to your assessment.

Generally, we recommend individuals clear their day’s schedule in order to participate as long as required. The duration of the assessment depends on the complexity of the case and severity of the circumstance. Your psychologist may be able to provide you with a general time frame once they have reviewed your documents prior to your assessment.

The cost depends on the time required to complete the assessment and the number of referral questions. An estimated cost will be provided and a retainer will be requested prior to scheduling.

A psychological risk assessment may be used as a decision-making tool to aid in sentencing. They may also be used to provide treatment recommendations and provide an understanding of someone’s psychological state and/or behaviour associated with someone’s offending behaviour.

A consultation is required prior to scheduling an assessment to ensure one of our psychologists is able to address your concerns. An assessment may need to be scheduled months in advance, so we encourage individuals to plan accordingly.

We are a private practice. We do not provide court-ordered assessments. Our pre-sentence psychological risk assessments are considered private. We encourage you to consult with your lawyer prior to booking an assessment.

A diagnosis is based on your psychological state including your emotional and cognitive well-being and/or behaviour. This may be an important aspect of a psychological risk assessment but considered separate from an opinion of risk of re-offence.

Evaluations are provided through the court. Our evaluations including psychological and/or risk assessments are privately funded through individuals requesting the service.
