Evidence-Based Risk Assessment
Individuals may pursue a private psychological risk assessment as part of the decision-making process in the justice system. Assessments can be used in the legal proceedings in either civil or criminal cases. They may be used to assist in child protection to manage safety concerns in cases involving minors. Individuals with a criminal history may also require an updated risk assessment following a period of rehabilitation and/or reintegration to the community.
No matter the reason for undergoing a psychological risk assessment, the results are the same: a deeper understanding of the behaviours and underlying factors that lead a person to act out through offending. A comprehensive psychological risk assessment can help individuals towards identifying criminogenic needs tied to rehabilitation while providing risk management strategies.
During a consultation, our psychologists will gather details about your case and concerns, ensuring we have the knowledge and expertise to conduct an assessment. We will discuss a timeline for completion and an approximation of the cost and time required. An assessment is scheduled after the retainer fee and required documentation have been received.
We ask that you prepare for the assessment itself by compiling all of your questions, a list of symptoms, instances of past problematic behaviour, and any other pertinent information relating to your case. You should also bring a list of all medications you’re taking. For individuals involved in the justice system, speak with your lawyer for any other documentation you may need.
The assessment time can vary greatly depending on your case, which is why we suggest setting a day aside to ensure we can complete it at a pace that works for you. The time required will also determine the cost of your assessment.
